The old link sharing experience obscured choices, hid defaults, and presented all options as equal, leaving users unaware of what they were actually sharing and with whom.

The redesign was heavily driven by behavioral and customer data. We analyzed recurring NPS feedback alongside Mixpanel and Pendo insights to understand where users struggled while sharing content and which secure sharing features remained undiscovered.
Multiple sharing concepts and user flows were iteratively refined through 3 rounds of usability testing, helping us simplify decision-making without reducing capability.

Decision: Egnyte's link sharing experience supports multiple links per file with different properties (such as expiry, editing, download allowed), and others.
Now, adding permissions into this would make an already rich experience overwhelming.

Problem: Users didn't know Egnyte offered such a range of secure sharing options since they were hidden and never explained in the UI.

Decision: All link properties are now visible upfront with contextual tooltips describing what each setting actually does in practice. So, users make an informed choice, not a default one.

Why: This directly drove a 37% increase in editable links, 46.17% increase in preview-only links, and 10.55% more links with expiry dates.

Problem: Adding recipients was entirely manual. This made it easier for users to create an "Anyone" link instead, even when it wasn’t the most secure option.
